Prior to putting Rey Mysterio back in the WrestleMania 22 main-event, there was
speculation that WWE might have Chavo Guerrero turn on Mysterio to set up a
match at WrestleMania. That idea never got off the ground, pleasing a number of
wrestlers who disapprove of the direction WWE took in using the late Eddie
Guerrero's name in storylines.
The use of Eddie Guerrero in storylines has been toned down, although it is not
known if any specific dialogue between wrestlers and WWE officials made that
happen. It is known that Mysterio, Chavo Guerrero, Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko
spoke with a WWE writer about the storyline's direction, but the concern never
made its way to management.
In fact, as has been reported, Stephanie McMahon stood behind the angle when
writers criticized its taste.
The McMahon defense of the storyline likely prevented more wrestlers—especially
those without strong political stroke—from taking an open stand against the
angle. Thus, very little heat falls on the wrestlers who were actually involved
in the on-air storyline.
